It is no coincidence that Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic medicine and other cultures around the world, advise against drinking cold water. Instead, they often recommend drinking WARM-Hot water, as this is believed to support digestion, blood flow and other health markers. But what does the science have to say?⁣

Key Facts

🚨COLD WATER RAISES BLOOD PRESSURE:⁣
The first study (Jianyong et al., 2014) looked at the effects of drinking cold water on blood pressure in healthy young students. This study included 44 normotensive college students. ⁣
They conclude by stating that the systolic and diastolic blood pressure increase induced by drinking water, especially cold water, should be considered in the diagnosis and management of hypertension.⁣

❌COLD WATER MAY HURT YOUR DIGESTION: ⁣
The next study (Xiu et al., 2006) looked at the Visceral hypersensitivity following cold water intake in subjects with IBS. ⁣
Cold water intake might cause EC cells to secrete serotonin (5HT). By initiating peristaltic, secretory, vasodilatory, vagal, and nociceptive reflexes, 5-HT directly and indirectly affects gastrointestinal sensation and motor and secretory function, hence causing symptoms in IBS patients. ⁣

💥TAKEAWAY:⁣
For some people, cold water can have a negative effect. For others, no dramas. Hopefully some of you can relate to this in some way. Remember, warm water prior to meals is always better for digestion.⁣
