⚠️CURCUMIN DEPLETES IRON LEVELS:
Curcumin has known properties as an iron chelator. It binds to ferric iron in the gut and causes iron deficiency by blocking absorption (Jiao et al., 2006).
👊🏾HOW CAN LOW IRON CAUSE FATIGUE?
Low Iron = Low Oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells.
In addition, low iron can impair THYROID function, and decrease overall metabolism (Eftekhari et al., 2006).
🤷🏽♂️WHY DOES CURCUMIN DO THIS?
For protection! You see, Iron, when in HIGH amounts in the body and organs, causes DAMAGE (Jones et al., 2016). It does this because it increases oxidative stress to nearby cells. High Iron/Ferritin is known to contribute to cancer and tumor progression, hence this is just one of the anti-cancer/protective mechanisms of Curcumin.
Curcumin in large doses or in supplement form that may deplete iron stores. It is therefore recommended to keep an eye on your iron levels via blood testing. Apart from this however, Curcumin has many benefits.
