You’ve probably heard this from someone before…
“Consume lemon water first thing in the morning!”.
But has anyone explained why?
Lemon water contains certain constituents that can encourage the liver to produce bile which is an acid that is required for digestion (Hecke et al., 2012).
However, bile is so much more than just digesting/emulsification of fat.
Lemons are high in vitamin C, which is great for improving the immune system,
But the question I had was why?
When I looked into it further, I discovered that Vitamin C has been shown to increase the production of white blood cells. Those white blood cells are the defender cells that attack bacteria and viruses.
They’re high in potassium, which supports brain and nerve function.
Even though the potassium content is quite low, it’s a great way to naturally get a kick-start to your day.
In one study, dietary supplementation with lemon polyphenols significantly up-regulated the mRNA level of PPARα in the liver, in comparison with rats on a high fat diet and a low fat diet.
These results indicate that the naturally occurring lemon polyphenols may also be a natural ligand/activator of PPARα, thereby up-regulating the expression of downstream genes involved in fatty acid oxidation (Fukuchi et al., 2008).
In another study, lemon polyphenols decreased Insulin levels in rats that were fed a high fat diet to the same level as rats that were fed a low fat diet.
In addition, Leptin level decreased, although this was insignificant (Jung et al., 2006).
If you enjoy lemon water in the morning, keep drinking it. I advise drinking it with a straw to avoid destroying enamel on your teeth.
